Setting up a chessboard correctly is the first step to playing the game. Refer to the image below, ensuring that you know exactly where each piece belongs.
Chess is played on an 8 x 8 board in which
1. The white queen and black queen should be placed on their own color square
2. The corner right square of the white side should always be white

The chessboard is divided into files (columns) and ranks (rows).
Files:

Naming of Squares or what is Chess Notation?
Chess notation is a system used to record and describe the moves in a game. Let’s learn how to name each square on the board using this notation, making it easier to follow and analyze games.
Steps to give a name to a square:-
1. Check the square lies on which file
2. Check the square lies on which rank
3. Write down the file name first and then the rank
The name of the square highlighted is e5,
as it lies on the ‘e’ file
and ‘5th’ rank.
